"Attached is a document explaining the CIVA INS and how to use it with the RFP 747-200 for those who want to know about this clever device. I cannot guarantee the technical accuracy, but it offers a good insight into how it works in principle and how to use it. [EDIT] I have replaced the Word format with PDF format and made one minor change concerning Great Circle Navigation

Great document! Thanks Barry. Didn't an incorrect programming of the CIVA INS in PANC result in the KAL007 747-200 drifting into Russian airspace over Sakhalin Island and getting shot down? At least that's what the made-for-TV movie was alluding to.

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> What I understand is that KAL was having some problems with their INS's. Whether it was human factors or mechanical problems I'm not certain but how a friend explained it to me it sounded like it was mechanical. There's more to the story though. Several KAL flights diverted because of INS problems costing KAL money. Pressure from KAL management forced pilots to choose between continuing the flight when an INS problem arises....or divert and be fired. The crew in question took option number 1 which benefited no one. Justin"

I had come across that before and if I remember correctly I had to reinstall the INS to get it to work. I'm guessing that you are pretty well versed in CIVA INS useage so you have probably got the present position entered while in standby mode prior to beginning the alignment. If not...do that
