Reverse Thrust

Question :)
Now i always thought that you could only apply reverse thrust when you were on the ground.
But in the latest edition of Aero Australia - a Magazine - It has a photo of a Russia Aircraft that the Russian President brought out for APEC.
I reckon it would be 8-15 metres off the runway landing and it has the reverse thrusters on already ?

Is this the norm ?

Probably depends on both the operator and manufacturer. The DC-8 with the JT3 engines was authorized for reverse thrust in flight for expedited descent. It was only allowed on #2 and #3 engines, but still, idle reverse in flight...weird.

I had read before that some older aircraft are approved to use reverse thrust in flight. It's the equivalent of using speed brakes.

The C-17 allows use of idle reverse in flight for that very reason - expedited decent.

I believe its against the Law with Civil Aircraft, but the Russians are a different matter, an old friend of mine is in charge of the manufacture of a fleet of tu204,s for the Chinese being built in Russia and according to him ,he has seen the Russians do it ,but its a definite no no in the West

Unrelated, looks like the FAA is in process of changing up some of the Sids and Stars to save on delays. One of the big issues is noise abatement of course. One artical said the FAA in some cases will not necessarily consider the issue of noise abatement when it comes to expediency of getting aircraft in and out of some areas.

People are already whining! LOL, I wish I could come in at about 100 feet off the deck with a C-5 screaming in slow flight!
