I curently have a Nvida 8800GTX - I see there is now the GTX280. Does anyone have experience with this new card or should I be the beta?

First, - I'm no expert techie
It's hard to say how a video card will operate, it depends a lot on the rest of your system , and I'm not familiar with that card.
I would suggest nowadays with the way things are going and how the new Fsim additions need quite a lot of power to operate that you should get the fastest you can.
I have just updated the 'puter and my techies suggested a dual core processor and installed an Nvidia GE Force 9600 GT. It has 256 mgs and with the AMD 64 X 2 processor (6400+ and runs at 3.25 Ghz.) and 4 gigs of RAM (although it only recognises 3.25 gigs for some reason) it runs like silk. (I still use XP and Fsim9)
Of course one of the problems with all that is the motherboard has to be upgraded aswell so it can get a bit expensive.
I was going to upgrade the video card on its own but the techies said everything has to be sort of balanced, so there is no point in upgrading just the card if the rest of it can't keep up....
As I said, I'm no techie, just what I was told.
Regards
John

I may be wrong on this, but I think for Dual Processors your RAM can,t be made up of differing Values, eg 2x500 3x1gig, you have to have the same value on both sides, 2 sets of 2 gig, or 4 x 1gig

Thanks Mike
As far as I know there are 2 sets of 2 gig ram thingys in there.
They (the techies) said it might not show as recognising it all, but it should be using all of it.

Yeah when I first upgraded my comp. to 4GB (2 x 2GB Sticks) it only recognised it as 3.00GB on Vista, but Microsoft released SP1 and now its recognised the full 4GB, im not sure whether or not XP SP3 does the same?
As for the upgarding everything so that its balanced, thats a load of nonsense if you ask me! I have always done my own comp upgrades (with the help of Ewing
) and everything ran smooth as a whistle when I first stuck in the 4GB RAM from 512MB, quite a jump for my comp. Then, I fancied a new graphics card, so got the ATI Radeon Sapphire X1650 PRO 512MB one which, to a certain extent, your comp. engineer was correct, as buying this required me to get a new PSU @ 500W. If I were to upgrade the graphics card again to the 1GB GTX 280, it would require me to splash out on new PSU once again, as the 280 requires something rediculous like 700W
So thats my current specs (near enough @ my motherboards limits) with the Intel Core 2 Duo Proc. running @ 3.6GHz.
Well, I would be interested in the 280 once the RRP drops
lol

Poped the card in last night - I am running FSX with
sliders all the way over and getting 17 - 21 FPS. Happy with purchase so far.
