Does following your progress on vatspy count as plotting??

Now that the poll has ended I would like to thank the 17 brave souls who anonymously answered the poll question. Unfortunately nobody who answered the poll was correct.

The only time where plotting of your position is required, is in Class II Airspace, which is wherever you will fly at a distance greater than 725NM miles from the closest NAVAID, such as while crossing a North Atlantic Track, etc. The requirement is actually set by ICAO for ALL OPERATORS.

A very simplified explanation of how it is accomplished would be:
1. Flight crews will plot their course on a special Plotting Chart using the NAT waypoints, such as 47North 040West.
2. Crew makes position reports upon crossing over each waypoint.
3. At ten minutes beyond waypoint passage, crew plots their exact position on chart to compare actual position to planned route. Crew would also plot wind direction
and speed for comparison with forecast weather data.

Now if you tend to fly over areas like a water crossing using accelerated time feature, the above would not be possible to do and you would not be online with ATC any way, however, if you like to keep things realistic and fly online with ATC, following these procedures, which are mandatory for real world crews, can actually make a fairly boring crossing, become interesting. Not to mention expand your skillset.

There is a rumor out that there may be some online training sessions coming soon, on topics such as this if there is enough interest.

I concur with Luc, John, I would be interested, though I,m afraid I don,t do much longhaul in real time, apart from the t/o and app and landing

John, Great idea.I too would like to take the opportunity to gain this skill set for the next puddle jump or Cross The Pond - looks the next event will be Eastbound. Where do I sign up!

Yep John once i get my FS PC back i would be up for online training too,long hauls short hauls whatever .

Well at least nobody picked Class B Airspace.....lol

I have been talking with the "Men Behind the Curtain" about experimenting with some web sites like GoToMeeting, where we can have folks come together and either use a white board or possibly Powerpoint. There are actually a few out there which are still FREE. Will keep you posted and anyone else with an interest, please list your name on this post or send me a message and I will add you to the list.
