Has anyone else noticed a "lofting" or "ballooning" characteristic on approach to either end of the main runway at Everett? I've encountered this no less than four times on two different computers.

The event unfolds the same, no matter which end of the runway you approach, or the winds present at the time. The approach is normal and stabilized until the aircraft is almost over the threshold of the runway. The descent is stable and the speed is stable. Just as you begin to throttle back and lift the nose a bit, you notice that you've climbed off the glide path! The upwards trend is strong and you really have to push the nose over and then cut thrust to get back to proper configuration!

I did two go-arounds last year on a different computer trying to make the approach and failed both times, from both ends of the runway as the air was calm at the time.

All of these attempts were made using the LCF, which I must add, performs beautifully at every other airport.

I've never noticed said ballooning... Are you on FSX or FS9?

turn on thermal visualization "scheme" in the FSX settings and take a look...sounds like you have thermals there for some reason

Ahh, that is something to check! I thought of that, as well. But since I've never consciously set any thermals I thought it couldn't be so simple. I will give that a look. Thanks for the suggestion, Tobias!

Edit-- another clue could be that I've used Active Sky (HiFi) products for years in FSX, currently using ASNext. I did have a 500' / min updraft or thermal selected in the configurator. But, as I mentions, this has never been so drastically obvious as at KPAE. I selected Thermal Visualization and put myself at one end of Everett, and saw a spiral, moved to the other end and saw nothing. Just tried a test flight in the Cessna and nothing happened. I'm still lost.

hmmm alright off into weird territory lol

i use ASN myself and i have so far not experienced something like this at everett i even did a test with a 747 earlier to see if i could replicate it somehow on my end but nothing....

question tho': what are your settings in ASN especially for: maximum downdraft rate and maximum updraft/thermal generation...500 is default i have mine set at 800

also for me i have the wake turbulence simulation disabled..doubt that is related however....and also have the enhanced turbulence turned off since it makes my pmdg birds go whacky

for craps and giggles can you try turning down your maximum up/downdraft stuff to zero and see what happens? they should (in theory) be gone if you do

doubt the problem is with the 747 it is very likley the weather engine for some reason

Yes, the maximum downdraft/thermal -updraft is set at 500'/min. I have disabled it to make a test run today. I think I left it "on" for the test flight in the Cessna. I'm also fairly certain that I had any thermal generation turned off in previous versions of AS.

I also turn off wake turbulence, and I will check the enhanced turbulence settings.


I will let you know what happens!
