"Ok, I realize these pics are not Globe Air pics per say, nor are they ""screen shots"", but if you look closely at the screens in the pics, they will show Flight sim, as it was 20 years ago.... Pic 1, Summer 1987, Fort Buchannon Puerto Rico, Military Police Station. I had the ONLY pc, and what do you think I did with it? [attachmentid=814] Played Flight Sim of course.... Pic 2, Six months later, I was discharged (honorably), and what do you think I did with my money? [attachmentid=815] Bought a PC to play Flight Sim of course.... In twenty years, I've moved on from keyboard flying to a joystick for years, and recently to a CH Yoke, Throttle and peddels. Oh, and my screens have gotten bigger - Pic 3: [attachmentid=816] There are a couple more pics of this experiment over on the Screen Shots part of the RFP forum, under the post titled ""RFP goes to the Big Screen"". (I don't own on of the $18,000 displays, but I do have fun at work at times.) Anyway, Thanks for looking. I just thought I would share with you all my moderate dedication to flight simming. Cheers!"

"While taken from the MAC version, your 1986 (right) Pic is very close to what is dimly visible on my IBM screens. Back then, the VORs worked, you ONLY had a ceasna, there was no outside views, the world was wire frame, Chicago had 4-6 buildings you could see through, and the VORs were only available up to about 200 miles around any area. Area 1:Chicago Area 2: New York Area 3: Los Angeles Area 4: San Fransico. Every where else was a barren flat wasteland. But if you were patient, and had a good sense of direction, you could fly, from Chicago to New York, with about the right distance between. I had spent hundres of hours watching that 12"" green screen..... and Hundreds more with the Amber one later....."

"Ahh, bringing back the nostalgic memories of MS DOS and Flight Sim 4. I now wish I had kept track of all my virtual flying, I'd love to know even roughly how many hours I had! ^_^ Image"

"Thanks a lot for that trip down memory lane. I remeber all of those version of FS as well. What's amazing is that you paid $2000 for those 'fast"" computers and you were probably really excited when you had a modem baud of over 50k!"

"Great post guys, very entertaining. I started with FS5 which was my first knowledge of the FS5 ""home airport""...you all know what it is. From that day I wanted to fly *myself* to that airport. This was before I had plans to even be a pilot. On 2/17/2001 I acheived that goal, just a couple years before a certain mayor overstepped his authority and had it torn apart in the middle of the night. I love seeing shots of pre-FS5, I'm facinated by those sims. Justin"

You are quite right. The Government spared no expence to buy the MP station a top of the line IBM PC. * Dual Double sided 5 1/4 Floppy drives (no hard drive) * CGA 320 x 200 4 color graphics on a monochrome green screen * Powered by a robust 8088 processor running at 4.77 Mz. * All this supported by 256 Kbyts of RAM. At the time, I was the koolest kid on the block. While the Chaplains Office had 2 PCs, they were TRS80s. Then, that PC next to the Christmass Stocking? That IBM PC XT Clone computer cost me $1,800! * Single 5 1/4 Double sided Floppy Drive * Single 20 MB Segate RLL Hard Drive * Herculese Compatable Monochrome Graphics card 2 color 720 x 348 (Oh, and 1 color was black) * Powered by an Intell 8086, with a TURBO button! That would boost the 4.77 Mhz to a wopping 8 Mhz! * Supported by 512 Kbyts of RAM. Twice the PC I had available in the Army! (Oh yeah, and I had to assemble the kit myself) My FS was version 2a."
