Hi!

Good stuff. I couldn't help noticing that one of th early segments had the crew use the "Dynasty 228 Heavy" callsign while departing PANC which we know to be the China Airlines callsign. Does the r/w Atlas provide ACMI or just crews to CAL? Just curious...

That was a few years ago. The aircraft was even painted in CAL colors. Today, Atlas provides ACMI to Emirates, Qantas, and Air New Zealand. Some 747's are even painted in Emirates colors. There are also some short term contracts with BA and LH.

I'm a callsign geek from waaay, waaay backin my USAF aircrew days. I was an AWACS controller so I got to see and use all kinds of really interesting and creative fighter and tanker callsigns. The best were at RED FLAG in the '80s and '90s especially the Aggressors. IVAN, CYLON and KREMLIN were a couple more obvious ones I remember. So, I tend to notice callsigns before much else.

Rick, I had to chuckle, you are right about that stuff. I was in the Philippines back 81 to 83, one of my aquaintences was a Major who was the squadron leader for a 15 ship F-5 Aggressor unit there. His call sign was "Baron Tess 01" I never asked... LOL

The F-4 guys had call signs like Wolf, Bear, Weasel, Tacky, etc,... I still have a tape of some of their endeavors they used to do in Cope Thunder. Funny thing, the tape is 30 minutes per side, and at least 3 times you hear Bear 01 ask for confirmation that the controller was talking to him and not Baron 01... Just plain "Baron" was also an F-4 designator.

Ahhhh, the good ole days.... :cry:

Speaking of pilot call signs, contrary to what we see on TV or the movies, most pilots' call signs are not "Iceman" or "Spike" etc. Most are usually derived from some memorable (i.e., infamous) event that usually involves 1) alcohol, 2) women, 3) some sort of flying bafoonery, or 4) any combination thereof. (The Gomers (aggresors) were the exception as you mentioned.) One F15 driver I knew from Eglin AFB was known as "GUE-MAN" GUE stood for "Go Ugly Early". See items 1 and 2 above.

Funny you should mention Red Flag. I went to the Air Force museum in Dayton OH yesterday and saw the IMAX movie about Red Flag. Cool stuff. The museum is a must. They've got three hangars full of planes covering 100 years of aviation. Even got a YF-22, SR-71, B1B, B2, F117 in there and you can walk around/under them and see them up close.

I've got both the DVD's, Polar and Atlas air from WAR. Both worth the buying :D

My squadron is "Banger".....after the Harvey Wallbanger drink. 8)

"World Famous Wallbangers of VAW-117"

Apparently one of the CO's in the early 80's liked them.

At one time , there were several -200's and -400's painted in China Airlines Cargo colors. I recall at least 5 or 6 all together.

Additionally N416 once wore the colors of EVA Air

In my opinion a better aviation museum than the Smithsonian. Been to Dayton and D.C. several times each, and I just think Dayton is incredible. It is limited to USAF, and doesn't have the civilian aviation landmark planes like the Smithsonian, but I love that place. I first went there when it was still part of Wright-Patterson AFB and the Thunderbirds were there. We also got to eat with the airmen in the cafeteria...very cool to a kid. In the Eighties I went several times, and then since 2000 I have been every other year. It's a great place.

good air museum is too LFBG Le Bourget there is a lot of history too ... there is one 747-128 fully display not a -400 a shame lol and of course a concorde SST ... that s for small persons im 6"5 and no way to walk in without being bended ...

ps : the cockpits i loved to be in: DC8, DC10, MD11, and of course 747 classic and -400 but for rooms the DC10 MD11 were hard to beat ... but this is maybe due to my size lol ....
