RFP VIP

Post by lauderj »

"I was just wondering if anyone in knew what the status of the RFP VIP edition is. From what I can gather from the panelshop web site, it appears that the effort has been left two other developers. Does anyone know the story? Jerry Lauderbaugh Pilot 1505"

"Jerry, I think that is about all any of us know , from what I gather, an update for fsx may come out, but ....?? It seems to me a lot of developers are waiting for the fds kits from microsoft. I would hate to see the 742 put out to pasture"

"Ed: Yes, I agree .... I would hate to see RFP die ..... There are not too many "steam guage" birds out there (DreamFleet 727 is the only other good one I think). Jerry Lauderbaugh 1505"

That's a good point which I hadn't realized before...the lack of truly good steam gauge panels. So many developers seem to be interested only in glass panels leaving RFP and the like to fill the large void in "retro" panels. Don't forget to add 767PIC/LDS to the good (excellent) steam gauge panels...if you let me count that one :) Justin"

"Well I guess the 767 is a bit of a hybrid as it's got an FMS. I did leave out one steam gauge bird though .... and that's the Flight 1 Super 80. Nice rendition of an older generation MD80s including an old style "Performance Management System". I am still a bit confused over the RFP742 VIP edition. From reading the RFP forum, it appears that there was going to be a new upgrade to RFP called the "VIP Edition". I don't believe this was simply an FSX upgrade ... I think it was meant to be a general RFP upgrade. Apparently, the developers has some sort of falling out and now just one of them has taken over the product ... apparently from what I can gather. I was just wondering if anyone here knew the complete story. Jerry Lauderbaugh 1505"

"hey Jerry, I have been eyeing the super 80 myself, but I am holding off on any new payware till we see what is going to be upgraded for fsx or not... the vip edition of the rfp is a upgraded panel, which if you joined the club for 12 bucks a year, you get updates as it was being developed. It appeared that they were working on a new model also, but things fell apart earlier this year on its development. Wheather or not it continues is not certain it seems. I am hoping that in the very least they can get the rfp version 2 workable in fsx, I would even pay for an update.... It seems as flightsim advances and payware planes get better and better that everyone seems to favor the glass panel planes, and wants those in their hanger. They are definatly easier to fly for the newbies, program the fmc , get it up in the air, hit the ap , vnav and lnav buttons and go watch tv for a few hours... There are so many older planes that if developed would be fantastic in fsx and beyond, but alas, it all comes down to dollars and cents in the end. Perhaps in time many will get tired of the glass panels and there may be a resergence of the old classics again..."

I mostly aggre with you Ed except one one point. The FMC is far from being easy. It is if you only plan and input the route but if you want to use everything it's got it is far from being easy. I am still learning about it. I will grant you that it is more easier to fly a SID or a STAR using the FMC thant the ''old fashion way on the 742''. 8)

"Louis, please dont misunderstand me, I love my pmdg 747, with the fmc there is lots of information readily available at your finger tips, and takes some time to learn it all. From what I gather reading other forums, a lot of new pilots do not bother to read and learn about these complex flight computers, they just want to press the go button and fly. The whole idea behind these payware aircraft is to learn to do it as the real world, regardless of glass panel or steam gauge, both offer a lot of fun and learning."

"Ed: I think you are pretty much right on with that last comment. Even tough the FMS makes an airliner a litter easier to fly, there is still much to do. Assuming that the particular payware you're flying models the FMC well, flying ETOPS across the pond can involve a lot of FMC work with preparing a second route (for the ETOPS alternates) and using the fix pages if you fly according to typical airline procedures.
