I,m looking for any method to reduce the Background Noise in my earpiece when I,m flying on Vatsim, at the moment I,m reduced to texting which isn,t realistic, I,ve tried reducing the noise in FS Settings with no joy, I can,t get past the Mike Setup in Vatsim,cockpit reduction and engine noise reduction doesn,t seem to make any difference, and the engine noise in the cockpit from the ATR 72 is particularly LOUD! Any advice from vatsim regulars welcome.

Well, I have the same problem, I just turned the engines and cockpit ambiance down, plus the environment (to like 30 or so). Also if you can't get pass the voice setup on VATSIM, try turning off the VHF simulation when you set it up, and after you pass the test, turn it back on. (if you haven't already) or just push Q when in a controlled a/s. things get really quiet then.
Another solution, one that I prefer, is to use a USB headset. That will give you two sound cards and you can then configure all the background noise from the plane to go to the speakers and ATC to the headset.
They are a lot cheaper than you would think - as long as you don't try to by the "high-end" stereo ones. Logitech had a headset that they were selling for Sony's PS2. It was marketed as a pure PS2 headset for about $30-40 but worked like a charm on the PCs. It doesn't actually say "Logitech" on it but it is from them.
Tomas is right, I am using a USB logitech. I too experienced a ton of noise, after a couple of flights, I got to where I plug in my headset only after getting FS up and going and before I start up Vatsim. For some reason, it keeps the aircraft noise on my speakers!? Anyhow whatever works right?
Just plug the headset into a USB and you’re basically done! Leave your FS sounds the way it is normally so that is plays through your speakers (I'm assuming that it is setup that way now). When you start FS and run Squawk Box, before you log in, go to Options/Voice and select the USB headset as the input and output device, then your done. I'd also run the "Calibrate Microphone" feature once after you still it up also.

Well i decided to have a look at the PC Manual and in the Audio Section i discovered that the Realtek HD Audio Manager is a more comprehensive piece of Kit than I thought, it enables me to have seperate audio streams between the Front and Rear Audio Sockets one to the Speakers and one to the Headphones,so hopefully I,ve cracked it, incidentally the as far as the ATR is concerned the Q button eliminates the external sounds but not the engine Noise in the cockpit when wearing Headphones, but that may have something to do with the settings i had in the Audio Manager,

A little late, but I just bought a Logitech USB headset and it works GREAT!! I love being able to hear ATC separate from the white noise. I can actually hear them now!!!
