Longest flight?

Post by Erica Benedikty »

:P

Just had a quick question. What would be the longest flight you could do? This could include doing a fuel stop. My longest online flight is 18.5 hours (real time, none of this x-time stuff). YSSY-CYYZ in the PSS 772. That was non-stop, but I was ready in the pilot manual that the pic could choose to land and refuel, so how far could you go? Is there a flight that is scheduled that far? I'm new, so if it's a really long bid flight I'm low on the pole.

Hi Erica,

I was wondering the same thing since I'm new as well.

I guess once the flight bidding process begins (which is tomorrow) we'll be able to find out,
I'm also always looking for the longest flights since those are my favs.

I forgot exactly how long it took, it was over 16 h: about a year ago we were invited to a fly in at PHNL Honolulu and I took off from EGPK Prestwick. Using Active Sky I had some strong jetstreams against me over Labrador, I managed to do it non stop but 2 engines flamed out while I was on final and I had less than 5,000lbs left in the tanks at Honolulu... I never told Justin about it!

Erica, check the Atlas forum, I am not sure at the present time, however I do post some very long flights on occasion. Feel free to fly any of those flights, seniority is really not something that will get in your way here as you will see. Even after the bid process on the Polar flights there are usually tons of open board flights that you can fly regardless of your seniority.

Re: Longest flight?

I set out on a mission a few months ago to do the longest, legal (regarding fuel requirements), flight possible in the -400. I was planning to do SCEL/VABB and did the fuel planning by hand. The flight planning was done in FSBuild. Unfortunately winds were stronger at altitude than expected and I had to land about 1.5 hrs short of VABB for fuel. SCEL/OYSQ was blocked at 15:28. Like you, I did this in 1x...no sim rate (I *never* do sim rate).

Because this is a fun topic and great challenge I would agree to anyone willing to try to beat my flight above with legal fuel planning, which includes 10% fuel that's often forgotten about, to let Bryan know in the Atlas department. Send him a request for an Atlas charter with the departure and destination ICAO's so he can post it on the Atlas board for you to snatch up and attempt. The only other requirement I'll put on this challenge is that there be at least one legal alternate that you can make with plenty of fuel left. Post your results here with some details of the flight and link to the submitted pirep if you can.

What I will do on this is post a 1 in the payload square, that way the amount of cargo is up to you. Justin, I don't recall if you carried anything but fuel, so you might want to add that here.

Also, in the remarks box down where everything is usually listed, I'll put the name of the pilot that has requested the long haul and that way there is no danger of anyone selecting that flight on accident. The name will reserve the flight for that particular pilot in other words.

Oh, and by the way... Don't just pick locations at random. I think it took Justin, me and one other pilot the better part of the evening trying to figure two "do-able" points to make the mileage work out. Its not as quick and simple as one might think.

Oh this should be fun. I start vacation next week so I will have time to do this. This will be a little more difficult using the 744 for the flight. The last time I did this it was using the PSS 777-200LR.
Stats from my flight last year.
Block Time: 18.2
Flight time: 17.9
Take off Weight: 737,911 lbs
Taxi Weight: 737,999 lbs
Dep IAS: 193kts
Arr IAS: 139kts
Landing Weight: 453,028 lbs
Fuel Out: 352989 lbs
Block Fuel: 286586 lbs
Distance: 8394nm
Vertical Speed: -431 ft/min
246 pax
Oh one cute stat: My ETA at Toronto was originally 21:05. By the time I touched down and taxied to the gate, time was - 21:05....

I did keep a blog of my flight if anyone is intrested, here is the link, it's archive now, Dec. 2007.

I just flew LAX-HKG. 6295nm in 13:48.

WOW

With Legal fuel, it is really pushing the limits of the 744. I burned 147700kgs of fuel. That was with a relatively light load of like 79800kgs or something like that, and landed with 14000kgs.

Again, wow.

There are a couple questions I saw about my flight, here are the answers:

Cargo: 44715 lbs.
Distance: 7545.1 nm (straight line SCEL-OYSQ). I attempted SCEL/OMDB which has a straight line distance of 7972 nm.
Fuel Burn: 349492 lbs.

As Bryan mentioned, there were a few of us working on this to determine the best city pair to attempt the flight. We also worked on the fuel together which was done using the PMDG fuel planning form that comes in the manual.

If I can get my computer fixed up by next week I will try another long flight to join in the fun :)

Interesting challenge! I suggest we set some rules like:

Minimum cargo: 40,000lbs?
Minimum landing fuel: 19,000lbs?
Time x 1 only?
How shld we measure the distance flown, flight plan or direct gps from A to B?

Please Justin...
