Yesterday, I flew from KWRI to ETAR, accross the ocean I was in a tail jetstream of 120kts which gave me a steady GS of 615 NM with an airspeed of .848... I never covered such a long distance so fast! (I was using ActiveSky)
I guess one could go even faster... but I would hate going the opposite way.

I had a 160 kt tail wind last week going eastbound. I was getting about 645 indicated on an MD11.

I remember a few months ago I caught a piggy back ride on a jetstream headed to EGKK on a Atlas flight. I had a 120KT tailwind pushing my GS to 635KTS.
ATC sent me a PM asking me if I had the afterburners running .

Real world story, one of my instructor friends claimed that he was up over the central US one time and had a ground speed of almost 230 knots in a cessna 152. He said it was during the summer months and the jetstream had dipped. I had always thought you had to be waaay up there to catch that but since then I have been told its possible to catch it at a lower altitude when things are just right.
