Another New Guy

Here is where the coffee machine and Coke machine are kept. Please clean up after yourself and do not remove the magazines from this area. A good place to exchange thoughts with Operations personel and other pilots.

Another New Guy

Post by ksucarl »

Hi all, I was just accepted into the VA yesterday, and am currently cruising on my 4th leg (TTN501). I'm currently a junior at Kansas State majoring in mechanical engineering with an emphasis in aeronautics. No RW experience (except as a passenger), but I'm trying to build up some savings for PPL instruction. College life sure eats up money. Anyway, I must say, I am very impressed with this airline! Full aircraft logbooks and maintenance, a realistic bidding system, wonderful PIREP software.. the list goes on and on! I think I'll end up staying here for quite a long time. Anyhow, just wanted to stop by and introduce myself. See you in the skies!

Sure am! Or was, anyway, until FS decided to crash 100 miles from TOD :?

Welcome Carl! About the crash, don't forget GCP uses autosave and you can recover your flight without having to do the whole thing over ;)

Whoa.....Justin.....it does?????? I'll take a look at GCP when I get home, but there's somewhere in there that you can load up the last save? GCP just throws the last save at FSX, and then it automatically launches the flight?

Of course! The feature is dependent on Autosave in GCP being turned ON. If FS crashes, start FS and load up the flight, then if PMDG load the panelstate of the same filename. Restart GCP and you will get a popup asking if you want to load a certain data file, this is the last autosave file before the crash. If GCP only crashes, pause FS and restart GCP and you will get the same popup asking if you want to load the last saved file. In both cases click yes and be sure to click the START LOGGING button to continue the log.

GCP saves the last 10 autosave files. If, heaven forbid, you have a crash that bends metal, you can go back several autosaves and reload that. Load the same filename in GCP and it will be as if it never happened.

Ugh.....I thought it just kept flight data, hahaha. That's what I thought the autosaves were, but it's good to know it's so much more than that. Did you write the program Justin? Making you a Programmer/First Officer? ;) If so, is it written in VB.NET?

Because you know what VB.NET is has gotten me excited! lol Unfortunately, it is written in C++.NET, not many seem to be familiar with that language. And yes, I did write the program from the ground up. I am however only a hobbyist when it comes to programming, only one formal class in my life and that was in high school, Pascal I think even!

Myself, along with my new programming assistant Rahul Parker, are working on the next generation of GCP, Globe Cargo Flight Manager (GCFM). It will have many features never before seen in the FS community and will be highly connected to the GC operation.

Nah, don't get too excited, haha. I've learned a little about Java, C++, and VB.....only problem is learning a little doesn't help much in getting a job. I'm taking another Java class right now, but wishing I had just stuck with the microsoft languages instead......don't ask me why....maybe I just like how "clean" visual studio is.

Very cool about a new version of GCP in the works.....once I feel like I can actually do something to help, I'll offer that help ;)
