Lost above KIAH

Post by raa57 »

hi guys,
just as i thought i was getting the hang of flying the RFP747-200 at least on short medium flights i arrived over KIAH last night and got totally lost in very choppy conditions and almost nil visibility during descent as i was coming in from the NW on a RIICE2 arrival i passed over RIICE at 10000ft which was the last waypoint on my INS and more or less decended straight in for rwy 15R,i had NAV1 on iLS freq 111.15 and NAV2 on 116.6(IAH)VOR and was looking forward to my first decent IMC condition landing in the RFP742 using AUTOLAND but as you see from the picture only the VOR2 needle is pointing to the VOR,this pic was taken on 2nd or 3rd pass thats why course direction are set 085/327 for rwy 8,9,33R as i was searching to see if any off there ILS moved the pointer it was only then it dawned on me the VOR needle doesnt move when tuned into the ILS freq.
anyway the time spent circling lost was spent reading up on the autoland and i realised i wasnt switching both my nav radios to the ILS freq which then lets you select the second autopilot and also nav sw to LAND.touchdown was a little hard but im happy that i just got it to work

Touchdown

the most green announicator lights i have seen yet on the 742 :D
Finally made it

one final point its nice to see that RFP simulates turbulence a bit better when connected to ASE than the PMDG744 does at it :D or is it just FS9 that does it better than FSX?

and no further pirep errors :D

Great Terry

I just did one aswell to see if I could remember how. To recap.....

Obviously do the approach and land checks.

Set up for ILS and Localiser Capture for Nav 1. (check capture altitude, ILS frequency and Runway heading). Leave Nav 2 on airport (or specific VOR) frequency, - for distance and direction reference if necessary.
When Localiser captured, set Nav 2 on ILS and Course to Rwy. Heading.
Set ILS on AP command selector, VOR selector should jump to DUAL
Monitor and wait for Glidescope capture.

Image

After confirmed Glidescope Capture, and still above 1500' AGL select LAND on AP command selector.

Make sure everything is set and stays on (For some reason my Flight Director went off at this point but I could reset it OK)

Image

At 1500 ft AGL "FLARE" should appear in Orange

Image

DON'T FORGET TO CLOSE THE THROTTLES BEFORE TOUCH DOWN (Speed still controlled by Auto-throttles)

At about 50 ft FLARE goes green and activates.

Image

Image

For some reason it drifted right before TD.

Reverse selected whilst straightening it up. (Autobrakes had been set to MIN before)

And yes FS9 always seemed to work better with ASE, I don't think it is FSX that is the problem but there are some problems with the PMDG 744s with it and ASE.

nice pics john :D :D explains the procedure very well

good to see others flying the old bird 8)

it was the setting NAV2 to ILS course that was getting me,

noticed that it seems to touchdown fairly hard though think i will use it but maybe disconnect the autopilot at DH at flare manually next time :D see how that goes

correct me if i am wrong but is the 747-200 not only rated as a CATII ILS aircraft and is not certified for full CATIII landings anyway?

im sure i read that somewhere

Thanks Terry

I.ve just updated the captions a bit.

I don't think they use the Autoland very often, - that is the real ones, - as you say, disconnect the automatics and flare manually.

Just be carefull as sometimes we used to get a situation where the throttles would not work correctly after disconnecting. We got only one working, or sudden full power and other strange things. I suggest you disconnect the auto-throttles before briefly to check.

This seemed to happen a bit mainly after a long flight.

I think that is true, even now, as you must have at least two independant GPS based nav. systems with at least two fully coupling 3 axis autopilots to make Cat 111.

This also applies for the STARS as they have to be flown very accurately.

The Nav system requirements also apply when flying the NAV tracks across tha Atlantic and Pacific. They have to install removable ones for ferry flights if they are not already on the aircraft.

We used to have great group flights when we only had the 742s. There were only a few of us here too at that time. It would be good to do again but unfortunately the time differences and everyday living gets in the way. I would like to try for one sometime. I will have a 6 days on, 6 days off roster from next month so we should be able to organise something.

Do you have Skype? mine is john.khan2

That's why I always land manually. I just can't let myself trust the computer to do it
