Intersection Names

Here is where the coffee machine and Coke machine are kept. Please clean up after yourself and do not remove the magazines from this area. A good place to exchange thoughts with Operations personel and other pilots.

Intersection Names

Post by Ben Collins »

Whilst Flying into KORD today I was following these intersections:

TREKI
KURKK
SOOLU
VULCN

Gave me a laugh on the 5 hour flight.

I recall there being a whole thread on the VATSIM forum about funny intersection names. If someone wants to dig it out, it may be a fun read!

The ILS 35 to MSP has JAMEZ OBERR SSTAR ROZEE LORAH.
http://aeronav.faa.gov/d-tpp/1104/00264I35C2.PDF

James Oberstar was a congressman from MN and was a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. He got MN the money to build the 4th runway at MSP, 17/35. We haven't figured out who ROZEE or LORAH are yet but one can only guess that they are either related to Oberstar or a controller.

You'll often find sports related waypoints at many different airports. MSP has:
TWINZ (Minnesota Twins MLB)
VYKES (Minnesota Vikings, NFL)
Gopher VOR (GEP, Minnesota Golden Gophers of the University of Minnesota)
KGEEE (Kevin Garnett, former MN Timberwolf now at Boston Celtics)
LYNKS (Minnesotas WNBA team)
TWOLF (Minnesota Timberwolves, NBA)
WILDD (Minnesota Wild, NHL)
BRDIE (Birdie, 1 under par in golf)
GOLFF (duh)
HRBEK (Kent Hrbek of MN Twins)
HOMUR (Home run)
KBREW (Harmon Killabrew, hall of fame MN Twins)

And some others:
GDNEE, PIKKL (MN is home of Gedney Pickles)
TRGET (MN is home of Target corporation)
WLSTN (Paul Wellstone was a representative who perished in a plane crash in northern MN)

and I'm sure there are more but these are what I could find quickly. Analyze this at other airports and you will find that many waypoints have some meaning to the area.
