Flying LDS 767 from VC

Post by Nomad »

Hi All,

I made my first flight in a very long time using the LevelD 767 yesterday, since I didn't realize when I selected the open board flight it was for a 763 :D . So I took the time to reinstall it and prepared to use it for my flight. It was the first time I've flown it in FSX, where I have transitioned to flying in the VC exclusively. I've owned this airplane for years, along with its PIC 767 predecessor, so I hate to give up on it. But I found several items had to be completed from the 2D views. Of course, it's an old add-on by now, so I wasn't surprised. I found using TrackIR I couldn't push any buttons in the main view unless I leaned in toward the panel. Never had that issue with any other aircraft.

Have any of you flown the CS 767 from the VC? If so, can you compare that experience to the LD 767? I've never had a CS aircraft, so I'm hesitant to make the switch unless it is a much better airplane from the VC than the LD. Just curious if anyone may have a comment, since there are a lot 763 flights available that are nice to fly when you are looking for a shorter flight.

Of course I can be more careful to bid flights for the 744 which I still truly enjoy flying in spite of its age!

I've had the CS757 and I think another product but I don't recall which. My basic opinion is that the panels look better than LDS, the annunciator lights are the best I've ever seen, and they do model quite a lot of the airplane. Not as much as PMDG though.

The down sides are that they tend to be more buggy especially right out of the gate and they may feel a little more cumbersome to navigate around the panels (2D). LDS felt very comfortable with their 2D panels and moving around them. CS flight dynamics leave some to be desired and it's this reason I prefer LDS. LDS nailed the flight dynamics.

LDS seems to be dead though while CS is churning out new products and updates to old. I'm interested in the CS 747 since RFP is also dead.

I share your nostalgia for PIC 767, that was the very first addon I ever bought for FS and wow, did I get lucky. That was a fine piece of payware back then, would still be pretty good even now.

The CS 767 VC does look very good. The problem is it doesn't look much like a real 767 flightdeck. To me it looks like an artist's impression of one. What puts me off is that you can see switchlight legends when the light is off. The real aircraft swithlights aren't like that. The OFF legend is mechanical and simply isn't physically visible when the switch is on and if the amber FAULT light is off the upper half just loooks black. The same effect is repeated on the MCP. Captain Sim improved things graphically with their 777, and if they redid the 767 VC in that style it would be my first choice. PMDG switchlights are much more realistic, especially the PMDG 777 ones.

The LDS VC is terribly dated, with its 2D overhead, so a lot of the time I use the 2D panel because it is one of the best designed 2D panels ever produced. I tried the hi-res version that is available on the LDS forum, but that suffers from the same switchlight texture issue the CS 767 has. Systemswise the LDS is still better than anything CS has ever produced so it remains my 767 of choice.

If I want to fly a 757 I use the PSS 757 in FS9. It looks good and the systems are OK.

Ah yes, the PSS 757, I forgot all about that. That was neck and neck with CS for me but I'd probably side with you on preferring PSS.

PSS died a long time ago. I know they were known for other products but I don't remember what - do you, or anyone else, remember?

Yes, sadly software piracy finished them off. They made a lot of good addons for FS9:

A320, A330/A340
B777,757
Concorde
Avro Vulcan
Dash 8-300

Part of the team started again as BlackBox Simulation.
