Upgrading Computer System

Post by nwadc10 »

I just ordered parts to upgrade my computer system. It's nearly a new build but I will be using some old parts like hard drives. I hope this system will produce good quality in FS, P3D in particular as I'm giving up on FSX.
  • Intel Core i7-5820K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.3GHz LGA 2011-v3 140W Desktop Processor BX80648I75820K
  • ASUS TUF SABERTOOTH X99 LGA2011-V3 DDR4 M.2 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 Type A Intel X99 ATX Motherboard
  • Corsair Graphite Series 760T Full Tower Windowed Case - Black (CC-9011073-WW)
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz (PC4-24000) C15 Memory Kit - Black (CMK16GX4M2B3000C15)
  • Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 XTREME Gaming 4GB GDDR5 Graphics Card GV-N980XTREME-4GD
  • Corsair HX750i High Performance Power Supply ATX12V/EPS12V 750 CP-9020072-NA
  • Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120mm PWM Fan (RR-212E-20PK-R2)
It's been a while since I've built a system, I hope the parts are compatible - I've done what research I can but the specs on Amazon aren't really detailed like on other sites.

What do you guys think, will I be happy with this build?

Ok good, I am really out of the loop on components so it was a lucky guess, I guess LOL.

I did find more info on the CPU after I ordered, sounds like the i7-4790K is a better processor than the i7-5820K just because it's cheaper and performs basically the same. The article said the 5820 would be better than the 4790 in a server type of application but not so much for gaming or general computing. Oh well. It's not worse than the 4790, just the jump in performance is negligible.

Some parts will be here tomorrow, others on Monday, and the last should be here on Tuesday.

i have a 4970K CPU - Flightsim and most other Games perform better with more CPU speed instead of more Cores, that's why a 4970K would be better!

I think the 980GTX is a smart choice as well, since P3D seems to be able to push some rendering to the GPU. I have a 750ti that gives me 20-30fps with really high settings. I have my 4790k set to 4.6ghz with h/t off and P3D never even taxes my processors, so me thinks my GPU would be my bottleneck. Not that 20-30 isn't smooth

I used the method of highest review ratings within my price range to determine what components to get. The GTX980 was highly rated so I went with that - lucky guess again ;) I wish now that I got the 4970 CPU instead of the 5820 but I'll see if I can overclock it a little bit. I read the 5820 is pretty easy to OC it to 4.0.

I last upgraded my computer 5 years ago and of course have forgotten all of my specs. I looked at what Windows reports for hardware and found my current CPU is 3.2 GHz. With the 5820 I'm getting only a 0.01 GHz increase, a bit disappointing. I currently have AMD 1090T Black edition, 6 cores and 3.2 GHz. The 5820 is 3.3 GHz out of the box.

Hi Justin,
I am a little late seeing your post.
I did the same thing a few months back.
I use Jetline computers, as my guide, to me they are the standard for flight sims. Notice their motherboard selection, AS Rock, is what I used.
I would highly recommend an SSD drive. I used a Samsung 500 GB.
I have gone back to one drive, putting P3D, v3.1, in the x86 folder, that's where the developers point it to. Installing add-ons is a breeze now.
I have more drives that I store stuff on.
You will be glad you went to the Nvidia card. Now you can use the Nvidia inspector.
I'll never go back to FSX
I overclocked to 4.5 GB with the built in AS Rock software. Which you can do with your K cpu.
I buy all my parts from Newegg, free shipping, and no tax, and they are fast!
Enjoy Justin,

I forgot about Jetline for reference.

I'll be happy with the 5820 as it will have an advantage over the 4790 in multitasking and rendering which I use for supporting GCVA via Photoshop, etc and do photography as a hobby which the program for that will benefit from the 5820. I found a video to OC the 5820 to 4.0 GHz quite easily and reliably without increasing temp much at all. I'll give that a shot. For pure gaming though it sounds like the 4790 is hands down better in part for the higher GHz out of the box and can easily be OC'd to 4.5ish GHz.

I decided to upgrade the HD after all. Getting a 1 TB SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 1 TB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E1T0B/AM).

Remaining parts will be here on Tuesday and I'll get it put together. I'm looking forward to building the system, it's been 5 years since I last built a system. It's always fun to put something together.

I also got P3D 3.1 the other day and plan on using that going forward with any new addon purchase. Unfortunately I didn't win the $1.6 Billion lottery so I won't repay PMDG for the existing models for P3D. I'll plan on getting 747v2 for P3D though and I've already got the Q in P3D.

Hi Justin,
Sounds, good. You are going to love the SSD !!! Like going from dial-up, to cable.
Oh, I forgot, you might want a water cooler for your CPU. I have the Corsair HD80, you might check to see what Jetline is using now. My highest temps are around 50C, at 4.6GB's, Temps., will run a little higher in the Summer.

I haven't looked at liquid cooling before because of my perception that it's complicated to setup and operate. I did glance at some parts thought out of curiosity right before you posted. I will probably look into it more on the next build - hopefully it's only a couple years down the road instead of the 5 this time. This build I will keep simpler with air cooling. The 4.0 OC on the 5820 sounds like puts the temp at around 50C just with air cooling.

Hi Justin,
I was thinking of the new water cooling, it's a closed system, no anti-freeze, etc. very easy to install. This one should fit in your case very nice.

I have one that is 5 years old and still running good.

Wow, it's a lot less expensive than I expected. I'm writing this from the new rig which means the air cooled heat sink is already on - for future reference, can heat sinks be swapped out on the same CPU?

Preliminary testing on the new rig:

I got P3Dv3.1 loaded up and using only default King Air 350 and default scenery in a metropolitan area and the difference from old to new is astonishing. The old system the sliders were mostly in the middle with a couple to the left (turned down) and FPS locked at 30. In desolate areas I was getting about 19 fps. With the new system which I've only tested in dense population, I started the sim with default settings, which is about where my old system settings were at, and the FPS was 20 but default is locked at 20. I bumped it up to 30, my actual FPS didn't move below 30. I decided to test the power and moved every setting as far right as it could go, even on items that I will turn down later because there's no visual benefit (such as clouds at 80km) but still tax the system. It took 20-30 seconds to load all the visual detail on the screen and I figured yup, this is way too much for this system. Much to my surprise that once the loading was complete, the FPS was 19-20 on the ground and moving and in the air it went up to bouncing around between 25 and 29 FPS.

This is all without touching overclock, this is out of the box performance on all components. The real test will be with detailed addon aircraft.

I have the h100i. Great little water cooling unit, all self contained and maintenance free. Yes, you can swap heat sinks, just make sure you clean the thermal paste off VERY WELL.

Hi Justin,
Glad to hear you got it going okay, you will enjoy simming even more now.
Like Allen says, the H100i, is a better cooler, for a few bucks more, and should fit your full case just fine.

This link is good for your settings.
I played with Hyper Threading, [on/off] could not tell any difference. Will leave it on.
