Engine Fire!

Here is where the coffee machine and Coke machine are kept. Please clean up after yourself and do not remove the magazines from this area. A good place to exchange thoughts with Operations personel and other pilots.

"I'm climbing out on the KATL-RKSI run. Climbing through 13,500 feet, I hear the fire bell clanging. Oh, s... I look at the overhead and its Engine 4. I pull the fire handle. The handle stays lit. I discharge bottle 1. The handle stays lit. I'm doing a 180deg turn back toward Hartsfield at this point. One more chance to put the fire out... I discharge bottle 2. The handle stays lit. I open the fuel panel and start pumping gas overboard for the landing. I look back at the overhead and the fire lamp is out. Whew... I set up for the ILS to Rwy08R at KATL. On right base I got the fuel where I want it so I shut the valves off and close the cover. With Engine 4 out and the bleed valve off, I got no engine driven or air driven pump for Hydraulic System 4, which powers the brakes. So, I turn on the electric pump for Sys 4 and leave it on. I do my first engine out landing in the 742 and taxi to the cargo ramp. I'm waiting for the maintenance crew to tell me what caused the fire. I didn't set up for any failures, so I guess there is a random failure feature built in. Got my juices flowing, thats for sure <!--emo&:)--><!--endemo--> I wonder if Justin will approve the PIREP..."

"Eek... According to the book, the electric pump for Hyd Sys 4 can only be powered by ground power or APU, so IRL it wouldn't have been able to power the brakes for me. I should've activated the Secondary Brake system, which uses Hyd Sys 1. Seemed like a good idea at the time tho wokawoka..."

"Excellent piloting skills, Jim. By the way, I will accept your pirep because mechanical problems are a realistic part of aviation. Considering this is a simulated aircraft, you are lucky...I haven't got a single engine failure/fire yet and you can see how many hours I've flown RFP just with GC! I need some excitement <!--emo&:)--><!--endemo--> Thanks for telling us your story, very interesting. Justin"

"Ok guys, I flew EGGL-UNNT and during the approach at Novosibirsk I heard the enginesound decreasing. No 2 engine simply stopped, but thanks to the flightstart I got her running again. The only thing I had to do was reconnect the generator and that is it. How big are the changes of two GlobeCargo-pilots experiencing one of ""Ralph's surprises"" in the time frame of two or three days????? i wish I was that lucky in the pool.......... Fortunately, all crew and planes survived! See you ih the skies (on 4 engines)!! Wijnand"
Greetings and happy landings,

Now isn't that much better than you controlling when and where things go wrong? There isn't anything like having the unexpected happen when you least expect it and that fire bell sure gets your attention. It sounds like both of you handled things very well and were as shaken up as a real crew would be. Great job . .

"I never had such events, like engine fire - always a calm situation in the cockpit! <!--emo&:P--><!--endemo--> But Ralph, short question - are there any Emergency Checklists available for our B742?? I know something about such situations, but it would be very interesting to have real material/procedures!"

[attachmentid=303] I am not sure if the above file was included in the documentation or not.
