Computer Builds for those running FSX...

Here is where the coffee machine and Coke machine are kept. Please clean up after yourself and do not remove the magazines from this area. A good place to exchange thoughts with Operations personel and other pilots.

Computer Builds for those running FSX...

Post by RCR »

I'm curious to know what Hardware and OS's some of you are using to run FSX . If you could give me a quick run down (CPU, Mo'Board, RAM, Graphics Card, OS: 32 or 64bit) that would be great. Also, could you mention what kind of performance your are getting, not so much what your frame rates are, but how you like it and how satisfied with it you are.

I'm looking at having to make a possible upgrade here as a result of having to do a scratch install of my OS (...damn viruses!). Given the age of my system (2006, single core AMD64 "San Diego", etc.), it would make sense to upgrade now. I'm also working with a limited budget, so I am especially interested in a system that is a moderately priced; "best bang for the buck" set up. Thanks in advance.

Robert

Ive got an Asus P5N-D mobo with a QX9650 CPU. 8MB RAM and an nVidia GTX275 graphics card. I havent had any real issues so far, except from the ones that Vista is causing me. Ill wait patiently until Windows 7, which is supposed to be really good for FSX.

QX9650 3G @3.4
Asus Rampage x48 mobo
4G ram
512M 8800GT @1920x1200 on 24" LCD
Vista Ult. x64

Sliders pretty high but not maxed, pretty good performance even in very dense sceneries. My very occasional forays into VC views soaks resources and slows things. While I don't track my fps at all any more, They are generally around 25-30.

General recommendation is get at least 4G mem, fastest quad proc you can afford and at least 1G video and definitely x64.

XP Pro with SP3
AMD Athlon 64oo x2 Dual Core 3.22 Gigs.
4 Gigs Ram (only recognises 3.25 for some reason).
Physical Address Extension (Whatever that is?).
Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT. 128 Megs.

Have tried fps settings from 19 to unlimited but it doesn't seem to make much difference.

Sliders fairly well up but not maxed. Runs well with the occasional very short blip.

A couple of alterations to FSX.cfg ie. -

(THESE ARE REPRODUCED HERE WITH WRITTEN PERMISSION FROM JOHN VENEMA OF ORBX FTX.)

Add these lines under the headings:-

[TERRAIN]
TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=1500
TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL=1500

You can try any settings for the trees and buildings from =1000 or so and have a look. You won't notice the difference visually, but it saves FSX from trying to load huge numbers of trees and buildings in the scenery, thus helping to speed it up.

[SCENERY]
SmallPartRejectRadius=2 (can be , =4, I have this on mine, it helps).

This tells FSX not to draw any objects in the distance which are smaller than 2 pixels wide. Helps particularly on approaches to busy airports. I have seen another site which recommends the setting at, =4 (which I use on mine), again try it out.

[JOBSCHEDULER] (This is a new heading to be added. I have it as the first heading in FSX.CFG).
AffinityMask=3 (For dual core PCs).
AffinityMask=14 (For quad-core PCs).

This tells FSX to distribute the load away from a single core of a multi-core PC. Helps with loading and management of texture and autogen caching. Works better with Quad-cores.

These all come from the ORBX FTX Scenery user guides.

[Main]
DisablePreload=1

This just avoids preloading the default flight and helps FSX start faster.

There are other settings for the scenery tab on the user guide. If anyone wants to have a look go to their site -

http://fullterrain.com

You cab download a free sample of FTX Blue from the free downloads and the user guide will be in that. Also have a look at the brilliant scenery.

Another thing. If you press Shift+O (the letter O, - NOT zero) This allows you to use your mouse to look around the virtual cockpit and use the scroll wheel zooming.

Keep the desktop settings the same as the settings for FSX. (ie 1280x1024x32) for mine as I have 2 monitore and that is the highest setting for the older one.

Disable your anti-virus when running FSX. (Might not be a good idea in general, but some anti-virus settings enable you to exclude FSX from the scan).

If using Nvidia the enhancer utility is recommended. Available from

http://www.nhancer.com

Regards
John

PS. There are several settings from the FSX - Options\Settings\Display tabs which I havn't added as this is long enough now.
