To complement Ted's link: to plot your routes you can use this: <a href='http://rfinder.asalink.net/free/' target='_blank'>http://rfinder.asalink.net/free/</a> It's the greatest online airway planner I've seen. Free of charge and works like a charm. Takes into account all of the one-way airways and even churns out the route format FSAcars likes. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif[/img]

I know when we're controlling online and we ask pilots to file preferred routing. I asked for a route from Dulles (KIAD) to Boston (KBOS), I got: KIAD PRYME2B PRYME DCT LAURN J222 JFK GDM3 KBOS Couple things right off. The PRYME2 departure is not in use due to airspace restrictions in the Washington DC area and the STAR is wrong. The GDM3 (Gardner3) is for arrivals from the west, north of Boston. (ie, Cleveland, Chicago, Detroit, Toronto ...). JFK is a valid transition on that STAR, that was added to make the GDM2 go to 3. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img] However you end up flying a lot of extra miles pointlessly. The correct route is: CAPITAL5 SWANN V268 BROSS J42 RBV J222 JFK ORW3 So, what I'm getting at is, this is a fantastic tool for places that do not publish preferred routing, if you fly online, or actually care enough to fly a route other than ""DIRECT"" [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif[/img] (pains me to write that ""flightplan""). For VATSIM flyers: <a href='http://www.eleventhstreet.com/fb2/' target='_blank'>http://www.eleventhstreet.com/fb2/</a> . That is the official flightplan database for VATUSA and a few Canadian FIRs. The number of routes are growing almost daily, by and large they do reflect the FAA preferred routing or at least reflect agreed-uopn routes between ARTCCs and FIRs. Have a great New Year!!!"

"Craig, You're right, regarding prefered routing when flying with VATSIM. However, the VATSIM route planner has limitations. Try searching for a cross-country routing-KLAX to KIAD. You get ZIP, nadda, nothing. I have to spend an hour getting the charts out and manually plot a route. Don't get me wrong, some folks really enjoy that part of sim-flying, but I like the flying part better! [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif[/img] That said, I like to use the on-line planner to get the route, but incorporate the preferred SIDS/STARS, and plug it all into FSBuild. Voila, I get a great plan."

"Like I said, routes get added all the time. It'll continue to improve as more and more ARTCCs add their routes into the system. Thanks for pointing that out though."
