Emergency Landing: Request Maintenance Team to YMHU

Here is where the coffee machine and Coke machine are kept. Please clean up after yourself and do not remove the magazines from this area. A good place to exchange thoughts with Operations personel and other pilots.

Emergency Landing: Request Maintenance Team to YMHU

Post by GSwindle »

"ALCON: Approx. 70nm north of YTNK (Tennet Creek), my avionics froze and started a very slow bank to the east. When I realized I was well off course and headed NE, I pulled out my map and managed to find YMHU (Mcarthur River Mine). Request Maintenance assistance and course of action from dispatch. Might all so need to check the struts... Set her down a bit hard. Flight NZ6882 Leg 2 N450PA First Officer Gregory S. Swindle P.S. Miners are treating me well and generously supplying food. So the question is; do you want me to wait for repairs and fly out or do you want me to restart the flight?"

Were you able to file a pirep? If no, you may want to restart the flight. If yes, you may want to ask the Atlas managers to continue from there, as they are handling ferry and maintenance flights."

"A contract maintenance crew from Qantas Airlines is on the way from Queensland and should be there by the time you get this message. Problem will be getting you back up as I believe you are only dealing with 4000 plus feet of runway. We may have to fly you out with minimal fuel YBCS has 10489' of runway and is just across the map (558nm.) east of your present location. Check your gross weight and figure your fuel for YCBS and see if you can you make the take-off with low fuel load over to take on more fuel at YBCS. If not, that trucking bill is going to be a dusy! If maintanence cannot fix the aircraft then we will have to fly another out to YBCS for you. Let me know what the prognosis is on the fix ASAP so if I have to I will schedule a ferry flight to you."

"Runway 07/25 has 6427 feet of runway available at YTNK: http://worldaerodata.com/wad.cgi?id=AS19700&sch=ytnk Be careful, and let us know if we need to take care of any repairs to the tarmac there."

"Gregory, I figure you will post late in the day and I probably won't get it till late, so if you can fly the AC out, do so and proceed to YBCS for fuel and then onto your final destination. YBCS is the closest airport that is rated for the weight. If not able to fly out, advise me, then hop a ride to YBCS and wait for your AC to be ferried over to you. Just be sure and post a reply so we know what the plan needs to be. Thanks."

Hmmmmm. I am wondering what happened to Gregory in the land of Down Under. Perhaps he ate all the miners food and they BBQ'd him for dinner?

"ALCON: Flash flooding and severe weather have damaged the runway and all roads. I see no possibility for leaving for the next fortnight. Quantus Mechanics have looked over the systems and require a fresh software load, they didn’t bring the correct disk. I sleep every night in the plane and watch the cargo. Miners are very friendly and helpful. I met a nice miner’s daughter, Susan. She helps me pass the long nights. FO Swindle Actually ive been very busy and am going to St. Louis for a week. I know i can lift off in time. However, my computer is doing something very wierd and i might have to reinstall. The week i get back i will get the bird in the sky complete the flight. Ill get some pics. Greg"

"ALCON: Sucsessful Takeoff from YMHU! Going to get a little sleep before I head for ZSPD tomorrow. Susan left me for one of the Quantus Mechanics, YMHU airport manager should be getting a cost estimate for repairs to the runway. FO Greg Swindle That was kinda fun little trip, I don't know why my avionics went out. Im sure it wasnt the FS it must have just glitched im my computer. Next time Ill look for a better AP to land at though. Is there a simple way to tell what Airports are 747 ready? Greg"

"Well, if you are using FSFK, you can bring up your in cockpit device and choose nearby airports, then check Airport information for those airports that should tell you runway lengths etc. Other than that, ATC is the only thing you can look to. And we know how that is......... Also if you study your route of flight at the planning stage, jot down some of the larger airports that you are going to be passing."
